These Mini Football Pizzas are a fun, kid-friendly game day snack that children will enjoy both making and eating. With just three simple ingredients, they’re an easy and nutritious option for a tailgate or party. If you’re hosting a pizza-themed get-together, these bite-sized footballs are a festive addition that adults will appreciate, too.

I partnered with the Dairy Council of Florida to bring you this delicious, kid-approved game day snack.

This recipe works perfectly as an appetizer or a snack for Super Bowl parties, tailgates, or family pizza nights. I made these with my sons and they loved cutting the dough into football shapes and spreading on the sauce. Older kids can assemble these almost entirely on their own—just supervise oven time.

Pepperoni and Italian seasoning are optional toppings.

Ingredients

  • Crescent dough (sheet): Use crescent sheet dough (not individual crescents) from the refrigerated section.
  • String cheese: Mozzarella sticks are easy to slice into thin strips for the laces and are a favorite snack for kids.
  • Pizza sauce: Store-bought marinara or pizza sauce works well; you can also use homemade sauce if you prefer.
  • Italian seasoning (optional): A blend of oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary adds a savory touch.
  • Pepperoni (optional): If desired, slice pepperoni into small circles or strips for topping.

Instructions

Follow these simple steps to make mini football pizzas that look and taste great.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. If the crescent dough is frozen, thaw it first. Lightly flour a cutting board and unroll the cold crescent sheet.
  3. Use a football-shaped cutter (about 4″ wide) to cut 9–12 footballs from the dough. Transfer them to a baking sheet.
  4. Spoon a small amount of pizza sauce onto each football, spreading to within a small edge of the crust.
  5. Bake for 7–8 minutes, until the crust is set but not fully browned.
  6. While the dough bakes, cut the string cheese into 2–3″ long strips and many short ½” pieces for the vertical laces.
  7. Remove the pizzas from the oven and arrange 7–9 short vertical strips across each football. Add one long horizontal strip for the center lace.
  8. Return to the oven for 1–2 minutes, until the cheese softens and melts slightly. Serve hot.

Expert Tips

  1. Keep the crescent dough as cold as possible. Cold dough is easier to cut and transfer without stretching.
  2. Partially bake the dough first. If you skip this step, the crust can remain undercooked while the cheese browns too quickly.
  3. Cut the laces long enough so they remain visible after melting.
  4. Taper the vertical laces slightly at the ends to mimic a real football lace pattern.
  5. If using pepperoni, cut the slices with a small round cutter or piping tip for neat, uniform toppings.
  6. For extra cheesiness, add a thin layer of shredded mozzarella under the sauce before baking.
Football cookie cutter.
A 4–4.5″ cutter is an ideal size for mini pizzas.

Your Football Cookie Cutter

Use a football cookie cutter that is at least 4″ wide; anything much smaller makes assembly fiddly. A cutter with subtle ridges on top adds a nice textured outline, giving each mini pizza extra visual dimension.

Other shape ideas

If you don’t have a football cutter, you can shape the dough into helmets or jerseys, or simply make small ovals and use the cheese to create the lace pattern. These pizzas are flexible—get creative with shapes and toppings.

FAQ

Can I use pizza dough instead of crescent dough?

Yes. Roll pizza dough very thin and prick it with a fork before baking to prevent large air bubbles.

Can I make other football-themed shapes?

Absolutely. Helmets and jerseys work well—use different cookie cutters and decorate with cheese or pepperoni.

Can I use other cheeses?

Mozzarella melts best and is mild in flavor, but you can experiment with cheddar, fontina, or Swiss for different tastes.
