Hello NoBiggie readers — I’m Amy from Delineate Your Dwelling, here to share a quick and charming DIY watercolor notebook tutorial. If you love lists and pretty paper like I do, this handmade watercolor notebook makes a lovely, practical project. It’s compact, personalized, and simple enough to complete in an afternoon.

Supplies:
Watercolor paper and a watercolor paint set
Chipboard or heavy cardstock for the cover backing
Cut paper for the interior (lined or blank)
Scissors or a paper trimmer
Sponge brush or foam brush
Mod Podge or a clear-drying glue/sealer
A bone folder or another firm edge for scoring and folding
Stapler (a long-arm stapler is ideal, but a regular stapler works fine)

Begin by decorating the cover: take a sheet of watercolor paper and lightly sketch a geometric or freeform pattern with pencil. I drew a simple diamond grid and then filled in selected shapes with watercolor washes. Work slowly, layering color until you achieve the look you want, and allow the paint to dry fully before erasing pencil marks. If watercolor painting isn’t your thing, you can substitute a favorite piece of scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, or printed design for the cover.

Step-by-step assembly:

1. Prepare the interior pages. I used five or six sheets of lined paper, trimmed to the desired size, and folded them in half. When folded, the stack becomes a slim, long notebook perfect for lists and notes. If you prefer, use more sheets for a thicker notebook or choose blank paper for sketching.

2. Cut and score the chipboard. Lay your folded pages on top of the chipboard to mark the size of the cover. Carefully trim the chipboard to match the folded paper, leaving a small margin if you like a slight overhang. Chipboard can be stubborn to fold, so score the fold line first with a bone folder or the back of a craft knife to get a neat crease.

3. Trim the watercolor cover. Place your painted watercolor sheet over the cut chipboard and trace the outline. Cut the watercolor sheet to size so it fits cleanly over the chipboard; you can align edges exactly or allow a small border for a framed look.

4. Adhere the cover. Apply a thin, even layer of Mod Podge or glue to the front of the chipboard and carefully smooth the watercolor sheet onto it. Work from one edge to the other to avoid bubbles or wrinkles. Once the glue dries, open the cover and insert the folded interior sheets.

5. Bind the notebook. Line up the folded pages inside the open cover and secure the spine with two staples along the fold. If you have a long-arm stapler, it makes stapling through the entire notebook easier. For a cleaner finish, you can reinforce the spine inside with a small strip of washi tape or glued binding tape.

This little notebook slips easily into a purse or backpack and is ideal for grocery lists, to-do lists, travel notes, or a quick summer planning journal. I’ve been using mine as a Summer To-Do list with my two kids — it’s small, portable, and lovely to look at.

Variations and tips:

  • Use heavyweight watercolor paper for a durable cover that resists warping when painted.
  • Try a dip-dyed or graded wash for a modern, minimalist look.
  • Add a ribbon or elastic closure by gluing or stapling it into the inside back cover.
  • Personalize with hand-lettered titles, stamped initials, or small collage elements before sealing the cover.
  • If you plan to use the notebook frequently, consider reinforcing the spine with a strip of fabric or gaffer tape for extra durability.
